Sechelt means “Land Between Two Waters”. It is an appropriate name for this town on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Sechelt sits on a narrow strip of land between the Strait of Georgia and Sechelt Inlet. Guests of Sechelt BC Bed and Breakfasts find stunning scenery, a mild climate, and a great deal to do.
There is excellent hiking here; enjoy a leisurely stroll along the shore, or strap on boots and head into the lush rainforest of BC’s Sunshine Coast. In the winter, ski and snowshoe along Dakota Ridge, taking in impressive views along the way. There are also two good golf courses on the Sechelt Peninsula.
Of course, water sports reign supreme in this part of British Columbia. There is world class saltwater and freshwater fishing here. Charter fishing is popular in the Strait of Georgia, while fly fisherman angle for trout in the aptly named Trout Lake.
Kayaking along the rugged shores of BC’s Sechelt, Salmon and Narrows Inlets is extremely popular. These three fjords connect to create over 350 km of sheltered, mountainous coastline. The surrounding land is largely uninhabited; keep an eye out for mountain goats high up in the mountains, and ancient pictographs carved into the cliffs. The views under Sechelt Inlet are as fascinating as those above it. Indeed, Jacques Coustau once dubbed Sechelt Inlet the second best place to dive on the planet, and with good reason. Scuba divers love to explore the sunken HMCS Chaudiere, and always keep on the lookout for giant Pacific octopi.
The arts are important on the Sunshine Coast, BC. It is hard to be in Sechelt during August without stumbling across a festival: the Sechelt Arts Festivals celebrates dance, theatre and painting; the Festival of the Rolling Arts is a not-so-ordinary car show; Hacket Park Craft Fair brings together more than 100 artists and craftspeople, along with musicians to keep toes tapping. And the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts brings together a wide variety of talented writers.
It’s always a good time to book a room in a Sechelt Bed and Breakfast.
