Salt Spring Island, BC, is the largest of the Southern Gulf Islands in British Columbia’s Strait of Georgia. It lies close to Vancouver Island, and across the strait from the Sunshine Coast. The weather is mild, the soils are fertile, and the views are incredible. People here are friendly, relaxed and creative. A stay at a Salt Spring Island Bed and Breakfast is sure to be pleasantly memorable.
Salt Spring Island has a rural feel. Thousands of sheep graze the grasslands, sharing their food with the local deer. There are dozens of farms, many of which supply the island’s restaurants with locally grown produce. Visit the Saturday Morning Market in Ganges Centennial Park, for a taste of what grows here; be sure to sample the island’s kiwis and olives.
The wines of Salt Spring Island are world renowned – indeed it is difficult to keep the blackberry port on the shelves. Thanks to the mild climate, the wines are known for their fruity tastes and earthy aromas. There are three wineries on Salt Spring Island, open to visitation and tastings.
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy hiking to the top of Mount Maxwell or through 80 Acre Park, kayaking the shoreline, and biking along quiet country roads. Many spots on the island offer terrific views of Vancouver Island, the Coast Mountains on the mainland of British Columbia, and the Olympic Mountains in Washington State.
When ready to relax, try an afternoon at a spa, or an evening of good food and music at a restaurant or pub. Or course, it is also lovely to curl up with a good book at a Salt Spring Island Bed and Breakfast.
