Vancouver, British Columbia, takes its name from Captain George Vancouver, the British explorer who reached this region in the 1790s. It is the largest city in Western Canada, and boasts an international citizenry that helps define this cosmopolitan place. You can find just about any type of cuisine in Vancouver, from Korean to North African, and there is a sizeable Chinatown here. Bring your appetite and ask your Vancouver Bed and Breakfast innkeepers for recommendations.
Natural resources were the basis for Vancouver’s growth in the 19th century, and many of Vancouver ‘s neighborhoods today are remnants of earlier settlements. Gastown once served as a feeding and watering hole for the men who worked in the adjacent logging mill. Today it is charming, with brick streets, old-fashioned street lamps, and trendy shops and restaurants. Granville Island was once a center for industrial manufacturing. Today it is known for its public market, various theaters and marina.
Vancouver has much to offer when it comes to arts and culture. It draws internationally recognized artists and performers, and has a thriving arts scene of its own. There is no shortage of festivals in Vancouver. Check out the international Folk Music Festival in July, and the International Film Festival each fall. Jazz lovers flock to the city for the Vancouver International Jazz Festival each June, and the International Fringe Festival in early September. The symphony, the opera, dance… you’ll find it all in Vancouver.
Stretch your legs with a stroll through Stanley Park before checking out of your Vancouver Bed and Breakfast. It is one of the largest urban parks in North America, with a heavily forested interior and trails along the shores of Burrard Inlet. A trip to Stanley Park is rewarded by terrific views of the North Shore Mountains, Mount Baker in Washington State, and the city itself.
